Sidewalk by Jay Gross

Sidewalk
Photograph on watercolor paper

2001

The curious color in this picture comes from a mish mash of light sources that fall on a sidewalk outside a coin laundry late at night. This is a digital camera picture. Film would probably be far less forgiving of such light sources. There's a distant mercury vapor street light, plus brighter, diffuse light from a sodium vapor fixture just above this area. There's also some fluorescent light seeping through a window (through blue curtains, no less) above the sidewalk. The round thing-a-ma-whop is some kind of cover for a gas line, water line, or whatever.

Sony digital camera at 2.1 megapixels on a tripod for approximately 3-second exposure.
